The History of Haven Hill
Haven Hill is located on the site of the original Penticton Hospital that was first built in 1916. The Hospital was a central service for the community and a lot of hard work by various organizations and non-profit groups went into advancing the hospital throughout the 20th century to keep up with patient needs. Over the years, the site expanded and additions were made including a maternity ward, operating rooms, nurses’ residence and lounge. However despite these improvements, by 1953 the hospital had outgrown the capacity of the site and relocated to another location.
At that time, the building was sold and subsequently changed hancs many times until it evolved into a seniors care home known as Haven Hill. In 1985, the building received major upgrades to try and extend the life of the existing structure. However, it remained as a small space and in 2005, it was deemed non-compliant for providing complex care services.
As a result, in 2007 Haven Hill was completely rebuilt. The transformation was exceptional as we moved from a building size of 28,000 sq ft into a new facility of 86,000 sq ft. With the addition of in-floor heating and air conditioning throughout the building along with many other upgrades for modern technologies, we evolved into a state-of-the art care facility that is now able to meet the comfort and safety needs of our residents and staff.
The layout in the building is very purposeful to achieve a comfortable, home-like setting. Each wing consists of a grouping of 11 or 15 residents together with a kitchen-servery, dining and lounge areas. Each of these neighbourhoods has been named after fruits common in the Okanagan Valley including Apple, Bartlet (Pear), Cherry and Grape. All other support services are located centrally including a commercial kitchen and laundry area.
Today, Haven Hill is home to 112 residents and we are continuing to grow. By October 2012, we will extend our services to 152 residents by opening another phase of expansion. At Haven Hill, we pride ourselves on the quality of care and life style for our residents. We are pleased to present such a well designed building to the Penticton Community in the lovely South-Okanagan area and hope that you will visit us.
